Fazenda Mainau: An Organic Gem by LSDH
In the heart of Bahia, the LSDH group has created its own organic orange and pineapple farm. A concrete response to the challenge of sourcing organic oranges, and a strong human project, with a school currently under construction for employees’ children.
A Gem with Deep Roots
In the state of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, the LSDH group planted the first seeds of an extraordinary agricultural project: building an organic farm from scratch, dedicated to growing oranges and pineapples, through a sustainable and human-centered approach. Today, this collective adventure has come full circle.
AN ORGANIC FARM, A DEDICATED TEAM, A PROJECT THAT GROWS WITH THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT.
Why Are the Oranges Green?
The oranges grown at Fazenda Mainau are sometimes… green. A paradox? Not really. It’s a natural phenomenon specific to tropical regions. In Bahia, the days are very hot — and so are the nights. But for an orange to take on its characteristic orange color, nighttime temperatures need to drop. Without that temperature swing, the chlorophyll in the fruit’s skin doesn’t fully disappear.
The result: the fruit can keep a partially green tint while being perfectly ripe, juicy, sweet and full of flavor. An unusual color, but a taste that lives up to our standards.
A Farm, and a Human Project Too
Today, Fazenda Mainau employs 115 people year-round. It is run on site by Paulo, working closely with LSDH group teams. Agronomic oversight is handled by Chloé, from our plant division, who supports the day-to-day management of the crops and the application of organic farming practices.
This human dimension is at the heart of the project. Together with our local employees, we are building a sustainable dynamic based on respect for living things, expertise and social balance. And because this farm is about more than production, we’ve begun a new chapter: building a school on site to welcome employees’ children in good learning conditions.
A Meaningful Gem
Fazenda Mainau powerfully embodies what has always driven the LSDH group: producing differently, with rigor, respect and commitment.
It’s one of our gems. And we’re proud of it.
